By train
It is probably easiest to arrive by train. Bamford rail station is ½ mile from the Community and is served by trains from Sheffield and Manchester every one or two hours – check your connections so you don’t have a 2 hour wait. For the Hope Valley line timetable from Manchester to Sheffield see here.
By bus
There are also nearly hourly buses (routes 271 and 272) from Sheffield Bus Interchange next to the railway station. These stop at ‘Bamford Bus Turnaround’ opposite Bamford railway station. Other more irregular buses come here too from Sheffield. For links to the up to date 271 / 272 timetable and also for routes 273, 274, 275, see here.
Be warned –
there are gaps in the timetable for both trains and buses, and a taxi from Sheffield will set you back about £30.
Here are the walking directions from train and bus – see map below to help you:
If your train is from Sheffield come out of the station (ramp or steps) and turn right over the bridge; if from Manchester, go out of the gate along the level station access road. Keep going along the main road (Station Road) in the same direction (northward) towards Bamford village, picking your way around the big trees in the pavement. Water Lane is the first turning on the left, about ¼ mile along, opposite the last of the big trees. You will see a black and white sign for “Networks.”
Cross the road carefully, especially if it’s dark (a torch will help you be seen) as it is a well used A road. Turn into Water Lane and walk down the slope, across the bridge and straight up the lane. You can’t miss the Community buildings, about ¼ mile up on the right, just after the lane begins to go uphill and bends to the left.
By car
Bamford is just off the A6187 between Hope and Hathersage. The other route is the A57 Glossop to Sheffield road – about 10 miles out of Sheffield there are traffic lights by the Ladybower reservoir and a sign left to Bamford. Go all the way through the village and turn right into Water Lane. The car park is just beyond the house, round the corner (see sketch map below, which is not to scale).
