Our family summer camp at Bamford will run for 10 days, starting with a shared supper on Monday 27th July and finishing with a closing session to say our goodbyes after lunch on Wednesday 5th August). The event will be families only and probably most suited to school-age children. We need everyone to reach agreement about respecting the wildlife, the woodlands, and each other, with the adults in the families being responsible for their children’s safety and behaviour – and if difficulties arise, it will be a chance to practise non-violent conflict resolution!
Accommodation: We have camping space for between 5 and 10 tents, depending on size. The ground is rather lumpy in places, so those less used to roughing it may want to bring air-beds. There is a compost loo in the old Signal Box in the shed area, and everyone can use the toilets and showers in the Main House as well. Some rooms in the house will be available for those not able to camp.
Activities: Most activities will be outdoors so please bring suitable clothing. Last year we …….
- camped in the woods
- made translucent collages with tissue paper in wonderful colours
- transformed the Spider Shed into a cafe
- had an enormous bonfire
- walked over hills and across stepping stones to find the best ice-cream in Derbyshire
- had pony rides round the meadow
- made Angel Sticks and learnt how to juggle with them
- hacked through the undergrowth to liberate the fruit trees and bushes
- extended the den in the trees
- made origami peace cranes
- went boulder climbing
- cooked on the campfire
- laughed, cried, talked, sang
- met old friends and made new ones
- didn’t want to leave
What happens this year will again reflect what all of us, children and adults, identify as our hopes and needs, what we can between us offer as activities, and most importantly a realistic assessment of our combined energy and enthusiasm. We will meet together each day with a ‘morning circle’, to share joys and any difficulties, and to plan the rest of the day. We will all share the many skills we bring with us and help each other lead activities so that, hopefully, no-one ends up doing too much, and everyone gets to have fun. Let us have your ideas and we’ll see what emerges.
Food: We will buy in lots of veg, fruit etc for shared meals, which we all take turns in making. This works out at an average of about £6 per person per day, depending on size/age/appetite, so we leave this up to participants to assess when it comes to payment. Breakfast and lunch on site generally use the ‘Spider Shed Café’ which has a sitting area, gas rings and a wood-burning stove. Evening meals are either round the campfire or up in the Community kitchen, depending on weather and what we are cooking – food stored, prepared or eaten in the Main House will be vegetarian only. Let us know of any other dietary requirements so we can try to plan meals accordingly.
Cost: Camping is at £10-£20 per adult, children £5-£10, per night. Our usual rates apply for anyone staying in the house (£15-£25 per adult, children £5-£10, per night). Some bursary help is available if needed. We ask you to pay a £30 non-refundable deposit on registration and the balance on arrival. We do advise you to please book early – this is a popular event and space is limited.
